Superior Drummer 3 (VST / AU / AAX / Standalone) instantly leaves a positive impression with its impressive GUI. The weird and gradiently curled fascia of SD2 has disappeared; Now we have menus and tabs (drums, grooves, mixer, and tracker) along the top, all tool editing controls in one context panel on the right side, and new sequencing tools at the bottom.
The main drum kit screen has never looked better than ever, with every piece represented by its realistic drawing. All this makes for an attractive and welcoming environment that newcomers who upgrade from EZdrummer 2 will find it easier and more intuitive than previous versions. In fact, EZdrummer 2 has had a profoundly clear impact, but SD3 has its own visual identity – an advanced gray look, the Logic Pro type that we completely agree with.
Kate and Capoud:
The main focus of Superior Drummer 3 is its massive core library of multi-specular drums and cymbals recorded by legendary George Masenberg in the vicinity of 11 true channels (see box). In terms of size, the SD3 loses the SD2 library with 20GB of water with 230GB of recordings downloaded in five separate packages – surrounding channels (which can be used a lot as additional ambiance channels for the stereo mix) add up to just 100GB.
Like SD2, as well as collections in the base library, SD3 can also download any SDX and EZX plugins installed. Unlike SD2, though, several individual segments can now be mixed as they see fit for all libraries. This should be done via the new search engine, rather than the right-click menu, but this is not a big chore, and the search engine itself works well, using a text field and a comprehensive bank of filters.
Drum from the sky:
The 230 GB SD3 library of raw cylinder samples (in the vicinity of 11 channels) has been registered by engineering engineer George Massenburg at modern Galaxy Studios in Belgium.
It consists of six complete groups in 14 configurations: Ayotte Classic (sticks and bars), Gretsch four-piece round badge (sticks, brushes, and bars, all with traps on and off, plus hammers), Ludwig (single and two-headed toms)), Premier Genista, Pearl Masterworks and Yamaha Beech Custom. Complementing this amazing list of extra traps and kicks, Cymbal 32 is provided by Zildjian, Paiste, Masterwork, Istanbul, Bosphorus, and Spizzichino.
Each buzz barrel includes eight joints (center, Rimshot, Flam, etc.), with polished traps of up to 12. The rock and cymbal ride comes with up to eight joints; Kicks can be open or hit. Toms can be hit in the center, the ledge, or the ledge. Toppers take the cake, however, 27 huge articulations each.
The love and care that Masenberg and his team created and track the SD3 Core Library are evident in every sample, and it acts as a pure and pure foundation for building your own rituals. In addition, there are also 350 single-sample electronic drums, which constitute a strong starting point for experimenting with the potential of new SD3 layers.
The X2 discs have been redesigned in SD2: in addition to loading extra pieces in an extracted column to the left of the interface, they can now also host external samples. This comes in itself with the new stacking function, where multiple pieces and multiple samples are placed on any “plate” of a tool, allowing, for example, to tie traps to a manual cap.
Each sound in Stack is independently or collectively editable, and all tools and samples added to the mixing channels are set in the new Route Instrument Microphone panel, which replaces the old microphone mapping window. The tools are released in the right panel, where 15 contextual “Property Box” modules collect all SD2 contrast parameter controls and add a number of new modules.
Squares always reflect the currently selected tool, hinge, or stack member, and can be repositioned and collapsed within the panel, or completely hidden via the Filter menu. Modules include Velocity Curve and Gate, Humanize, Voice, and Layer (MIDI and Hi-Hat CC Edit) (modify your hi-hat pedals CC “open”). Most notable are the new Tuning and Pitch FX controls.
Adjustment – applied offline to all joints of the specific device – once set, provides separate re-separation algorithms for drums and cymbals, and it looks remarkably realistic in both cases. Pitch FX is an eight-point entertainment envelope.
Confused Increase:
Regardless of the addition of additional channels required for surround mixing, the offset time shift (up to 10 ms for channel delay), and the instrument release latch (envelope adjustment), the Superior Drummer 3 Mixer has not changed significantly from SD2. It still has 16 indoor buses, 16 exits, and each channel expects to find it in a full suite of drum tools, and bleed controls (now on custom board) for realistic “spillage” between microphones.
You get ten dynamic processors (including Urei and Fairchild emulation, quad-band compressor, and transient modulus), three EQ equations (modern parameter, Neve 1084 simulation and modified filter), and five distortions (tape, valve, Bitcrusher, etc.), six frequencies Algorithm (plate, room, hall, etc.), three delays (tape, filter and echo classic) and a set of adjustment effects (Phaser, Chorus, Flanger, etc.).
The Track:
For some, the biggest new feature of Superior Drummer 3 might turn into the Tracker tab. This stunning disc replacement system analyzes multi-track disc records to determine the type of cylinder or cymbal dominant in each track, converts detected transients into MIDI data (exportable), and catalyzes corresponding elements in the currently loaded group, using the balance mix handle between the original sounds and the substitution.
The detection algorithm is guided by machine learning, based on the analysis of 1.4 million cylindrical paths, and scanning signal properties across 512 frequency ranges. It’s shockingly accurate and has successfully known to cut gadgets close to most of the time in our test, and (understandably) is only struggling with overhead.
They look great, and with every channel and bus able to accommodate up to 15 of them, the creative possibilities are endless. Bouncing down is now less difficult. SD3 can instantly bounce off separate channels or the full stereo mix, split cymbal from overhead, and even output all of your monetization channels as separate files. About time too!
Inserting macro handles (up to 100 of them!) Is also welcome. Each component can be effortlessly set to the largest possible number of controls from anywhere in the program as desired, and linked to a MIDI controller for editing multiple parameters and DAW automation.
In the groove:
Superior Drummer 2 did not have an integrated sequence, instead, it took MIDI input from the accompanying plugin EZ Player Pro, where MIDI clips were browsed and played. SD3 provides selection and sequencing of hundreds of built-in MIDI hits and fillings – plus all installed expansions – “ internally ” by combining EZdrummer 2’s Song Track (optimized with multiple paths to define alternate takeovers), Song Creator (suggests appropriate clips based on file analysis Imported MIDI), Browser (Grooves tab, complete with filters, Tap2Find and MIDI Drop Zone) and play mode edit interface (change ride group segment, opening and more).
By going deeper further, the fully functional MIDI disc editor allows you to record and program your parts from scratch or edit the included sections, which feature quantity, dynamics shaping, fast slope, and automate rhythm and time timing changes. While many will still prefer to program their beats using DAW’s DAW tools, the ability to do all of that from within SD3 itself is great; Needless to say, MIDI import and export are supported.
Bigger, better, and more:
We’ve been using it for a few months now, and everything from the mega library to the ultra-smooth graphical user interface, sequence on board, amazing effects, and amazing tracker still looks cool, “ new ” and exciting.
